How To: the tanning space of your dreams
Your weekly (or daily) tanning regime doesn't have to be laboured. Really, setting aside a little time to check in with yourself, prep your skin and apply your tan can, in this day and age, end up being an incredibly relaxing and nurturing endeavour for your mind and body. Whether it's still at #interiorgoals stage, or you're setting out to make it a renovated reality, having a beautiful space to pamper and bronze yourself in is the ultimate luxury. By no means do we suggest you start ripping out your vanity just yet - you can opt for just a few tweaks or additions to your space to elevate it's mood. Even the most subtle adjustments can take your slap-dash application of Lotion, Gel or Mousse into a opulent sense of ritual that will leave you feeling like you've just been pampered at a day spa.
1. Choose a distinctively neutral colour palette
Focusing on earthy, raw colours will imbue you with feelings of groundedness. They'll also help you focus on creating a natural looking tan, since you will be immersed in the palette to guide you. Earthy colours give a space a sense of warmth, comfort and calm that will encourage your application to be a nurturing and relaxing time at the beginning or end of the day.
2. Bring the tropics to you
Channelling the R-and-R vibe of a holiday, doesn't have to necessarily mean actually going for one. You can set aside a few minutes each day to vacate your life, get a safe, healthy glow and enter the tropics - even if you've recreated your dream desert island in a corner or on a shelf. Plants are a really wonderful way to oxygenate your home, which in turn lifts your room and boosts your healthy and vitality. Unlike vases filled with flowers, they don't need much maintenance and they'll always have your tanning sanctuary looking perfectly sleek and modern.
3. Punctuate with lavish accoutrements
This will be the easiest way to transform you space - and the most affordable. Some new towels, a warming aromatic scent or a new and improved display for your tanning products can take you from DIY to decadence in minutes. We love sticking with an earthy colour palette, but monochrome with brass accents can look beautiful as well.
Try adding some functional elements too: that way you can keep things purposeful and decluttered. We love (clockwise from top): Weak End Club's tactile pots, Tom Dixon's Quartz Reed Diffuser, Bases 212's Tray Table in Brass Finish with Brass Tray, Iris Hantverk's Lovisa Bath Brush and these bronzed Missoni Bath, Hand and Face Towels.
4. Sleek surfaces make for sleek tans
There's something about marble that always spells luxury. It's weighty and lustrous; it always looks modern. If a complete refurbishment is not on the cards just yet, finding a slab with a beautiful patina to place on the vanity as a way of displaying your products can really transform the mood. Add bonus: if you happen to spill any product on it, it's very easy to clean.
5. The best light is natural light
Even though your tan is sunless, your space doesn't have to be. Choosing a room flooded with natural light will not only boost your mood, but on a fundamental level help you see where your product is being applied, or in the case of our Gradual Tanning Lotion, assess the development of the pigment. Natural light is a great way to fine tune your self tanning practise, through repeated ritualistic application.
