Destination: Andronikos Hotel, Santorini
At the core of The Base is the desire to celebrate what is naturally ours by nourishing and enhancing it. So too is the foundation of Klab Architects' Andronikos Hotel in Santorini. This curvaceous white-washed stone structure honours its pristine landscape in both materiality and mood, with a humble palette of alabaster, cerulean, and bone.
Sitting atop the famous rock "Skaros", this stunningly serene hotel calls to the more traditional cave-like vernacular homes of the island, while refining itself through minimalist decor and strategically placed luminescent lighting. A beautifully reimagined 1970's home, it boasts a spectacular view out over the crystalline Aegean that would itself be the zenith of any holiday.
It's not difficult to picture yourself reclined on the skybar terrace, sunning your legs among the aquamarine furnishings that seem to somehow make your bronzed glow even more radiant by contrast. And after a couple of hours dozing off in the rich afternoon heat that the Greek Islands do so well, all there is to do is to retreat to one of the six penthouses, sit back and take in the tranquility.
