How to: Properly Cleanse
Instead of jumping straight into cleansing it’s important to remove the make-up, oil and any residue that's build up during the day. Use a make-up wipe, oil or a simple and inexpensive cleanser like Glossier's Milky Jelly Cleanser to clean the skin and prepare it for a deeper and more effective cleanse.
Now that your skin is fresh, it’s time to cleanse. Cleansing you’re face isn’t just about removing your make-up but is to help keep your skin soft, decongested and prepare the skin for other products.
It’s important to pick a cleanser for your skin type, it should feel hydrating and conditioning on your skin. We love Eve Lom Cleanser as it’s not created for one skin type but works for many. If you are breakout-prone try a cleanser containing acids to target blemishes like the Rationale Seboctye Clear Cleansing Gel.
A double cleanse is a great way to make sure your face is really clean, you don’t need to use more product when double cleansing, split what you would use in one wash and just rinse in-between applications. You will feel the product activate on your skin a little quicker the second time which means it’s really giving your skin a great clean. It’s also important to take your time, use small circular motions around your face and neck, try to also cleanse for 3-5 minutes to give the product time to work.
It can be nice to once a week treat yourself to a face steam, either professionally or at home. Use a few drops of oil, we love to use tea tree as it's a great anti-bacterial but only use a small amount as it can be quite strong. Fill a bowl of boiling water, add the oil and steam your face, use a towel over your head to trap the steam and allow it to open your pores and detox your skin.
You don’t need to exfoliate everyday, it can often be too strong and do more harm then good. But it’s great to get rid of dead skin and congestion by gently exfoliating your face. Make sure you pick an exfoliator that has small granules, you don't want to be scrubbing the new skin on your face but help it shed the dead cells. Exfoliate once a week in summer and twice a week in winter as a general rule but make sure you response to your skin and give it what it needs, not one formula will work for all but find what works for you.
Seeing a professional skincare consultant can do wonders for your skin and really help you benefit from your day-to-day cleansing and beauty routine, allowing your products to work well and keep your skin deeply cleansed and healthy. We love monthly Omnilux light treatments to keep bacteria under control, tighten pores and they really make our skin glow.
Toner isn’t for everyone but can be a great way to make sure your skin is clean and free of make-up or dirt even after cleansing. It can also be good to treat your skin for specific problems. We would recommend avoiding toners that are alcohol based as they can be stripping and very drying for the skin.
If you are breakout prone, keeping your skin clean is so important to help keep it clear. Bacteria is a big factor to try and combat with breakouts. Other factors like hormones, diet and stress level certainly play a part but bacteria control is a great place to start when trying to control blemishes. We are big believers in simple solutions, like tea-tree oil or by using a product like a blemish stick by Indie Lee. If you aren't seeing results try products that includes salicylic and glycolic acids to help eliminate blemishes and speed up the healing process, or consult a dermatologist.
