Three Easy Relaxation Techniques (you can do right now!)

It's not every day we afford ourselves some "me" time, but really it's one of the most important things for our health and well-being. We at The Base are always here to help you enhance your inner and outer beauty and while that means glowing, bronzed skin (of course), it also means taking care of ourselves from within.

Activating your parasympathetic nervous system is crucial in conserving your energy, boosting your immune system and inhibiting the free-radical damage that stress can cause on your skin. By taking even a few moments each day to steady your breathing and quiet your mind, your heart rate will slow down, you will increase intestinal and glandular activity and relax the muscles in your gastrointestinal tract to improve your digestion. Your body will return to a natural state of calm and will be able to do all the things it needs to (like circulate blood to all of your organs, regulate your hormones and digest your food) with ease. This means beautiful, glowing skin and a more grounded you!

So, if you're feeling a little frazzled or like you're always hitting the ground running, these tips might help you relax, unwind and float back down to Earth. Your skin - and your insides - will thank you.

 

1. Try a meditation app

No secret here, meditation is at the top tier of the relaxation pyramid and is one of the most powerful health practises you can get into. Meditation is often used to clear the mind and ease many health concerns like aiding in digestion, high blood pressure, depression and anxiety as well as encouraging you to develop a sense of compassion, love, patience and forgiveness. 2. Go for a walk

Walking is one of the oldest ways to burn off nervous energy. It gets your blood pumping without the spike in cortisol that intense periods of running can sometimes cause. Plus, it will get you outside, which means fresh air, no computer and a healthy dose of Vitamin D to put you in a good mood. Some even say that walking for 20 minutes can wake you up as much as a coffee, without the caffeine slump a few hours later! 

 

3. Steam your face

It may sound strange, but there's a reason you feel so relaxed after a good visit to your aesthetician. A good cleanse and steam can relax the tension in your facial muscles, revealing a softer, calmer you. After cleansing, simply fill a ceramic or glass bowl with boiling water, add a drop of pure lavender essential oil and lean your face above the bowl with a towel over you to contain the steam. If you don't have lavender essential oil, just throw in a couple of chamomile tea bags. Ten minutes and you will literally be glowing and serene!
